i had this issue with my power adapter and it turned out to be a short in the power cord, the insulator in the middle of the two cables had shifted which caused the cable to temporary short out, this was not an issue until about a month after i first heard the clicking, after that the cable would not work at all. i had my brother in law check it out and he found the problem and fixed it by holding the insulator in place with some electrical tape. my thought on the sound is that when something causes a short the power is diverted to the ground wire and clicks to warn you of the fault.
i hope i have been helpful in some way, now onto my new power issue.
