Re: Orb Wakes Up Just A Very Tiny Bit
by Tim A
I'll say it again, I do not have a barrier between myself and my digital media. No, I can't actually watch live TV on my cell phone but apparently I wouldn't be able to do that with Orb either even though my cellphone is an IP connected device. It seems Orb only supports a very small subset of IP connected devices and not the "any" that you seem to suggest. Again, this goes hand-in-hand with your marketing jargon that is just ass-backwards. Here is a list of what Orb supports as of today from this link:
Cell Phones Any Microsoft Smartphone Nokia Series 60: 3230, 3600, 3650, 3660, 6260, 6600, 6620, 6630, 6670, 7610, 7650, N-Gage QD Nokia Series 80: 9300 Communicator, 9500 Nokia Series 90: 7700 Sendo X PDA's Any 2002 or 2003 Microsoft PocketPC HP iPaq 3600, 4100, hx4700 HP iPaq h6315 Dell Axim X50 Note: Palm devices do not support the Orb Media Service. As future Palm OS releases support streaming media, Orb will likely support Palm devices at that time. Desktop/Laptop's All laptops or desktops with either RealPlayer or Windows Media Player Supported TV-tuner cards ADS Instant TV Deluxe PTV-305 PCI ADS Instant TV Deluxe USB (External) Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150, PVR-250 or PVR-350 (Note: WinTV PVR-USB or USB2 are not supported) AVerMedia UltraTV Media Center PCI 500 and PCI 550
I have a few different programs and tools that allow me to access all of my data from wherever I am. There are also a number of products and open source tools available to program PVR's from remote. Perhaps all Orb really gives me is a single product to do a lot of this and also makes it easy for the average user out there. I'm not the type of user who could care less especially since I can see through all the BS and hype I see coming out of marketing. If it wasn't for that I'd almost be tempted to try Orb. I really don't want to pick apart everything here but I also can't get over this "it was only costing us $.30 per month per customer to host the service... at that point it doesn't really make sense to charge". I can just imagine explaining this to shareholders/investors: "You see, we reduced our operating expenses to next to nothing and increased our profit 10 fold. So, instead of reducing the price to our customers who we are signing up left, right and center we decided to just give it away for free. Please keep pumping your money into the company because when we reach 10 million customers we'll need 3 million per month to operate". Come on, who do you have working financing? SShove those folks back into a cracker jack box. I know you are moving to an advertising model and I wish you luck there. Just don't expect me to want to download all kinds of your advertising to my cellphone and incure the cost associated with that as well.
