I really don't get what all the fuss is about river of news. I've been using my news aggregator on PDA's and lousy cell phone screens for about 2.5 years. I just spent an hour int he Doctor's office yesterday catching up on some news on my lousy cell phone screen (which happens to work well enough). The beauty is that I don't have to care whether someone has provided a river or stripped down view and I can view it the way I like to read news and not the way Dave thinks I should read news.
And I've said this before, if you really want to read in a river of news style then Bloglines lets you do that. Most other aggregators do as well I'm pretty sure. I just can't be bothered to waste the time to verify that myself. So whats all the fuss and why is everyone wasting a bunch of time creating "river" views of content?? I'm sure someone will enlighten me in the comments here. Sunday, September 10

Saw Borat the other night at the Toronto Film Festival.
Without a doubt this will be the most outrageous movie of the year. Can't wait to see it again when it comes out in theatres. Missed half the dialogue with the audience laughing so hard. There were two scenes that for some reason reminded me of the great Peter Sellers (Pink Panther series). You'll know it when you see it. Here is Borat's arrival for the red carpet: In case people don't get Borat, I found this to be a decent description: "Make no mistake, at its heart, 'Borat' has a very serious message.
Cohen is too intelligent to leave anything to chance. The film, as well
as being hugely entertaining, should also be considered a textbook
example of how racism is as much a product of idiotic conformity, as it
is fear and ignorance. Amongst the 300lb naked men, enraged feminists
and Pamela Anderson porn videos, Borat's message about American society
could be lost. That it remains is no small achievement. 'Borat' will be
the most extreme piece of cinema you're likely to see this or any other
year. Bring on the backlash. Borat, do your worst." Full article is here but don't read it if you don't want to know about the movie before seeing it. Tuesday, August 15

Cuban is pretty much right on the money here:
Today though, with all the excitement about rich media, whether its video or audio, you hear and read all about views and listens. Which leads me to the question: Just what is a view or listen ? For podcasts, is a listen a download ? I hope not, i have several podcasts in Itunes i subscribe to, and that download every episode, but I havent listened to in a long while. A couple others I have listened to the first several seconds or minutes of, but havent really dented. How would what i just did fit into the podcasts metrics ? In radio there is Time Spent Listening. There are quarter hours , where a radio station gets credit for someone listening for 15 minutes if they listen for 5 minutes. Are there standards for podcasts ? Then there are videso on the net. Just what exactly is a view ? Our HDNet Trailer for an upcoming Dennis Rodman show has been viewed 2339 times. I know i have gone to the site and it has started running at least 20 times that I didnt watch it all the way through. Are those counted ? I cant find anywhere on the Youtube.com site that defines how views are counted. Did i miss it ? Thursday, August 10

I've been waiting for this announcement for a long time. Finally the greatest comedy show returns for what is likely the last season:
Larry David has decided to bring "Curb Your Enthusiasm'' back to HBO for a sixth, 10-episode season. Continuation of the series had been somewhat
up in the air since last season's finale was entitled, "The End.''
(Gee, that sure seemed like a hint.) HBO executives had indicated last
month that David was on the verge of signing on but it took a while for
him to make the final call. No word yet on when the new season will air. Also of note is The BookWednesday, August 2

See previous articles Part 1 and Part 2.
Implemented some changes that are available in the Google Maps API v2. Apparently Google made significant speed improvements so that should help when network nodes update. Also double-click to zoom and continous zoom are now enabled. Tuesday, August 1

Joel follows up on his article "The Parils Of JavaSchools" (which I blogged about a while ago here) with another excellent article titled "Can Your Programming Language Do This". Go check it out here.
And now you understand something I wrote a while ago where I complained about CS students who are never taught anything but Java (via Joel On Softare).

The developer of the best windows utilities on the planet has been gobbled up by Microsoft. Probably means the end to a lot of these utilities being available for free download.

Waterboy points to an article by
If someone ever asks you why does this computer thing have to be so
complicated, review this little piece of math niceness with them. I
find that encapsulates in a nice single story the simplicity of a
mathematic idea with the complexity of a complete solution. Of course
once you mention the words math and binary in the same sentence you’ve
probably lost 95% of your audience (via waterboy).
